That work later grew into the Core Grainger 4 and Grainger 5, now played by bassists including Rhonda Smith, Eric Bass, and Kevin Walker. Grainger built his reputation long before that. The Baltimore native toured with Pockets as Earth, Wind \u0026amp; Fire’s opening act in the late ’70s, then became a busy East Coast session player. From 1986 to 1992 he held the bass chair in John Scofield’s band alongside drummer Dennis Chambers, recording Blue Matter, Loud Jazz, and Pick Hits Live. His credits also include George Duke, Nancy Wilson, Frank Gambale, and Acoustic Alchemy. This bass was built by the PRS Private Stock team for its namesake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e The back of the headstock is signed by Paul Reed Smith and hand-labeled “Custom Built for Gary Grainger.” The body pairs a carved figured maple top with a mahogany back, finished in high-gloss nitro. It weighs 10.2 lb. The bass is used and in very good condition. The top shows light swirling, a few light scratches, and a handful of tiny dings in the clearcoat. The back has more dings and some scratches. The ebony fretboard carries mother-of-pearl bird inlays, a 12\" radius, and 24 frets on a 34\" scale. A 1.725\" brass nut, PRS 5-string brass bass bridge, and PRS by Gotoh bass tuners make up the hardware, finished in brass and smoked black chrome.
