Fender Custom Shop Artisan Maple Burl Jazz Bass Relic Honey Burst
Serial Number: CZ574239
Weight: 8.8 lbs.

The Fender Custom Shop Artisan Maple Burl Jazz Bass Relic in Honey Burst is exactly what the Artisan series exists for: a Custom Shop '64 J-Bass built around an exceptional piece of wood. The top is 4A flame maple burl, its swirling, chaotic figure caught under a honey burst in nitrocellulose lacquer with a relic'd finish, laid over a two-piece off-center ash body sorted for weight and finished in a brown grainfill that lets the ash pore structure show through on the back and sides. Burl of this grade is unpredictable by nature, so no two Artisan basses look alike — this is a one-of-a-kind instrument, and at 8.8 lbs. it's well-balanced for a burl-topped J-Bass. A 4-ply tortoise '64 Jazz Bass pickguard finishes a look that's simultaneously period-correct and unlike anything else on the wall.

The neck is AAA roasted flame maple in the '60 J-Bass "U" carve (.790" at the 1st fret, .990" at the 12th fret) under light-relic'd nitro — roasted for stability and a drier, faster response, with flame figure running through it. The AAA rosewood fretboard carries white pearloid block inlays over a 9.5" radius, with 20 medium jumbo frets, the standard 34" scale, and a comfortable 1.5" nut in bone. Four-bolt construction keeps the platform faithful to '64, while an RSD Deluxe bass bridge upgrades the sustain and string coupling well past what the vintage bent-plate design managed, with better intonation range and a more solid transfer into the body. Jazz Bass tuners with the oval F logo in relic'd nickel complete the vintage-correct hardware package.

Electronics are a hand-wound pair of 60s vintage Jazz Bass pickups in the neck and bridge positions, wired to the classic two-volume, one-tone layout that has anchored recordings for six decades. That configuration is deceptively deep — favor the neck pickup for round, warm, fingerstyle fullness, roll to the bridge for the nasal midrange growl that cuts through a dense mix, or run both wide open for the scooped, hum-canceling J-Bass voice that sits perfectly under almost any arrangement. Whether you're a session bassist who needs an instrument that tracks cleanly in any genre, a gigging player looking for a Custom Shop-grade J-Bass that earns its keep on stage, or a collector after an Artisan piece with a top that will never be duplicated, this one delivers on both fronts. This Fender Custom Shop Artisan Maple Burl Jazz Bass (Serial #CZ574239) includes its original Fender Custom Shop black hardshell case.
