This 1957 Gretsch 6189 Streamliner in Bamboo Yellow/Copper Mist (Serial #26664) is a true vintage Gretsch hollowbody from the brand’s golden era. The two-tone finish pairs a Bamboo Yellow top with Copper Mist on the rest of the body, a color scheme Gretsch offered for only a short window in the mid-’50s. The top is laminated maple over a maple body, finished in nitrocellulose lacquer and trimmed with white binding. After nearly 70 years, the lacquer has checked naturally, giving it the look vintage collectors want. This one weighs a light 6.26 lb.
The neck is a 3-piece maple/ebony/maple build with a C carve (.790" at the 1st fret, .935" at the 9th fret). It’s slim and easy to play, with a vintage feel. The bound ebony fretboard has pearloid block inlays, a 10" radius, and 22 medium frets. The original frets are in great shape, with little to no divots, which is uncommon on a guitar this age. Other specs include a 24.5" scale and a 1 11/16" bone nut. The set-neck joint adds sustain and resonance. The headstock carries a pyralin veneer with the Gretsch “T Roof” logo, a period-correct detail collectors look for. A Gretsch Synchro-Sonic bridge and floating tailpiece anchor the strings, with open-gear tuners, nickel/chrome hardware, and a Lucite pickguard.
The neck position holds a non-original Filter’Tron humbucker, the pickup at the center of the classic Gretsch sound. It delivers a clear, twangy voice with more punch and less hum than a single-coil. The controls are a volume and a 3-way toggle. Whether you’re a rockabilly player chasing the real thing, a country picker who wants vintage hollowbody twang, or a collector of 1950s Gretsch guitars, this Streamliner delivers. This used vintage piece is in very good condition, with checking, dings, and scratches on the body and neck, chipping around the neck binding and headstock seams, and light scratches on the hardware, which is largely free of tarnish and pitting. This one (Serial #26664) comes with its original Gretsch hardshell case. Order today from Brian’s Guitars.
