Fender Custom Shop 1960 Tele Custom Journeyman Relic Black
Fender Custom Shop 1960 Tele Custom Journeyman Relic Black
Serial Number: CZ587180
Weight: 7.6 lbs.
The Fender Custom Shop 1960 Telecaster Custom Journeyman Relic in Black is the elegant, bound-body variant of the Telecaster, built to the specs that made the early-'60s Custom a different animal from the standard model. The two-piece alder body is sorted for weight and comes in at 7.6 lbs., finished in black nitrocellulose lacquer with white body binding wrapping the top and back — a detail that reads as understated class rather than flash, and one the Journeyman relic treatment flatters perfectly. Journeyman is the sweet spot in the Custom Shop's relic range: broken in and genuinely played-looking, with checked lacquer and softened edges, but well short of the heavy wear a Relic or Heavy Relic carries. A 3-ply parchment '60 Tele pickguard warms the black-and-white palette and completes a look that's period-correct down to the details.
The neck is 5/4 quartersawn maple in the '60-style Oval "C" carve (.820" at the 1st fret, .890" at the 12th fret) under medium-tint nitro with a light relic — a comfortable, rounded profile that fills the hand without the bulk of the earlier baseball-bat necks. The AAA rosewood fretboard is sorted for dark color, carrying white Micarta dot inlays over a vintage-correct 9.5" radius, with 21 narrow-tall frets that give modern bending and intonation accuracy while keeping the vintage visual. A 25.5" scale, 1.650" bone nut, and four-bolt construction keep everything faithful to 1960. The Tele 58-63 bridge with three threaded steel saddles delivers the ringing sustain and characteristic Tele snap that plate-style bridges are prized for, alongside vintage tuners with the Fender logo in relic'd nickel.
The electronics make this Custom more versatile than its vintage looks suggest. Hand-wound Twisted Tele pickups sit in both positions — a design that keeps the bridge pickup's cutting twang and midrange bark intact while giving the neck pickup a wider, more open voice with a hint of Strat-like chime, solving the one complaint players have leveled at traditional Tele neck pickups for seventy years. Run through the volume, tone, and 3-way blade selector, this bass covers authentic country twang, roots-rock bite, and warm, articulate jazz-adjacent neck tones without a single modification. Whether you're a session player who needs one Tele that handles every call, a country or Americana guitarist after the classic bridge voice with a usable neck pickup, or a collector drawn to the bound Tele Custom's understated elegance, this one earns the case space. This Fender Custom Shop 1960 Telecaster Custom Journeyman Relic (Serial #CZ587180) includes its original Fender Custom Shop brown hardshell case.
