The Gibson Custom 1957 Les Paul Special Reissue in Root Beer (Serial #761133) takes a classic P-90 workhorse and gives it a dressed-up top. The original 1957 Les Paul Special was a plain mahogany slab. This Gibson Custom Shop reissue keeps the mahogany body and adds a 3A quilt maple top, a pairing you rarely see on a Special. Quilt is one of the scarcer maple figures, since only a small share of trees grow it, and a deep, even quilt like this one is harder still to find. The Root Beer finish is gloss nitrocellulose lacquer. It’s thin enough to let the quilt roll and shift under the light. This one weighs 7.8 lb.
The mahogany neck has a 1950s Chunky D carve (.900" at the 1st fret, 1.00" at the 12th fret). It’s a full, rounded handful that fills the palm and gives chords a solid anchor. The rosewood fretboard has cream binding, cellulose dot inlays, a 12" radius, and 22 medium jumbo frets. Other specs include a 24.75" scale and a 1 11/16" nylon nut. The set-neck joint ties the neck and body together for strong sustain and a warm, woody response. The Historic Wraparound Tailpiece combines bridge and tailpiece in one piece, giving the strings a short, direct path to the body. Kluson Deluxe tuners and nickel hardware finish the vintage look.
