The Gibson Custom Ultima Tree of Life in Trans Geode Gloss (Serial #CS601755) adds high-end visual appointments to the Les Paul Custom, including multi-ply abalone binding, a pearl and abalone Tree of Life inlay, and gold hardware throughout. A 5A quilt maple top sits over a solid mahogany body. Quilted maple is far less common than flamed maple, and a 5A grade calls for deep, tightly packed figure across the whole top. This one moves and shifts under the light. The Trans Geode Gloss stain lets that figure come through, sealed in gloss nitrocellulose lacquer. It weighs 10.0 lb., with the sustain and low-end weight mahogany Les Paul builds are known for.

The mahogany neck has a Modern Medium C carve (.820" at the 1st fret, .965" at the 12th fret). It fills the hand without getting in the way, and the gloss nitro finish matches the body. The set-neck joint ties neck and body together for strong resonance and long sustain. The ebony fretboard carries the Ultima’s Tree of Life inlay in mother of pearl and abalone, a vine that runs the length of the board, finished with white binding. Other specs include a 12" radius, 22 medium jumbo frets, a 24.75" scale, and a 1 11/16" Corian nut. The headstock is faced in 5A quilt maple stained Trans Geode to match the top, with abalone split diamond and logo inlays and multi-ply abalone binding. Grover Kidney tuners, a Tune-O-Matic bridge, and a stopbar tailpiece round out the gold hardware.

The pickups are a Gibson 490R in the neck and a 498T in the bridge. The 498T is the hotter of the two, with upper-mid push that drives rock rhythm and cuts through on leads. The 490R is smoother and rounder, for vocal neck-pickup leads and warm cleans. Controls are the classic Les Paul layout: 2 volumes, 2 tones, and a 3-way toggle, so you can blend both pickups in the middle position and shape each one on its own.
