Gibson Custom Hummingbird Elegant Koa
Serial Number: 21186100
Weight: 4.62 lbs.

The Gibson Custom Hummingbird Elegant Koa reimagines one of the most recognized acoustic guitars ever built — the original square-shoulder dreadnought, introduced in 1960 — with a tonewood you won't find in the standard Hummingbird lineup. Part of Gibson Custom's Artisan Series, this build pairs koa back and sides with a AAA Sitka spruce top under scalloped X bracing, finished in a rich Honey Burst gloss nitrocellulose lacquer with cream binding and multi-ply purfling. Koa brings a bright, maple-like sparkle that warms and deepens with play, and a three-rope marquetry strip down the center of the back adds a classic, handcrafted detail rarely seen outside the Custom Shop. At a light 4.62 lbs., it's as comfortable to play for hours as it is striking to look at.

The mahogany neck carries a Rounded C profile (.865" at the 1st fret, .915" at the 9th) and is joined to the body with a traditional dovetail set-neck joint for warm, resonant sustain. A bound rosewood fretboard with abalone split-parallelogram inlays runs 20 medium jumbo frets across a 12" radius and 24.75" scale length, with a wide 1.73" TUSQ nut for confident fretting. The headstock carries Gibson's abalone-inlaid logo and crown, and gold-plated Grover Rotomatic tuners keep tuning stable string after string.

The appointments carry through to the hardware: a belly-up rosewood bridge with abalone dot inlays and a TUSQ saddle and bridge pins for clear, articulate note definition. The Hummingbird's signature pickguard gets its own elevated treatment here, too — a tortoise-shell design with silver and gold-foil stamps of the model's classic flowers, butterfly, and hummingbird motif, shifting color and shine as the light hits it from different angles.

Plugged-in tone comes from Baggs VTC electronics, pairing an under-saddle Element pickup with an internal preamp for a natural, amplified acoustic voice on stage or in the studio, with volume and tone controls mounted at the edge of the soundhole for quick access that stays out of the audience's sightline. It's a guitar built for the fingerstyle player chasing koa's shimmering top end, the strummer who wants Hummingbird warmth with a different tonal character, and the collector after a genuinely elevated take on a legendary shape. This Gibson Custom Hummingbird Elegant Koa (Serial #21186100) includes a Gibson Custom hardshell case. Order today from Brian's Guitars, your authorized Gibson dealer.
