“It’s been a dream of mine for years to design a guitar that includes some of my favorite vintage specifications but with a modern spirit and aesthetic. After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of what a reboot of the electric guitar should look and feel like.”
– John Mayer
The PRS Silver Sky in Black Plum (Serial #0436223) is John Mayer’s signature model, developed with Paul Reed Smith over 2 years of research and refinement. The pair started with their favorite details from 1963 and 1964 single-coil guitars, then updated them with modern thinking. The result has the warmth and familiarity of a vintage instrument with the precision of a new one. The alder body is finished in Black Plum. It’s a satin nitro finish, paired with a multi-ply white pickguard and nickel hardware. This one weighs 7.12 lb.
The bolt-on maple neck uses the 635JM-R carve (55/64" at the 1/2 fret, 63/64" at the 12 1/2 fret). It’s the rosewood-fretboard version of the Silver Sky neck, with slightly rounded shoulders that fill the hand more than the original maple-board shape. Both carves came from studying vintage necks and from Mayer testing guitars on stage. The rosewood fretboard has small bird inlays, a vintage 7.25" radius, and 22 PRS Medium frets (.085" x .045"). Scale length is 25.5", with a 1 21/32" bone nut. The headstock is PRS’s signature shape, inverted to suit Mayer’s playing and to keep string length behind the nut consistent for steadier tuning. Vintage-style closed-back tuners use PRS’s locking design. The PRS steel tremolo adds Gen III knife-edge screws and sits flush to the body, so it only bends down in pitch. That added body contact makes the guitar louder acoustically, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the single coils. A double-action truss rod adjusts from the front of the headstock.
Three PRS 635JM single-coil pickups sound round and full, with a musical high end that never gets harsh. They run through 1 volume, 2 tone controls, and a 5-way blade selector. That gives you everything from glassy neck-pickup cleans to snappy in-between positions and a bridge tone with bite. Retooled knobs and a curved, molded metal jack plate round out the details. Whether you’re a blues player chasing classic single-coil tone, a worship or session guitarist who needs clean, articulate positions, or a John Mayer fan who wants the real signature model, the Silver Sky delivers. This Silver Sky (Serial #0436223) ships with a PRS Premium Gig Bag. Order today from Brian’s Guitars, your authorized PRS dealer.
