This 2019 Collings City Limits in Dark Cherry Sunburst (Serial #CL191300) is Collings’ take on the classic single-cut. A flamed maple top sits over a Honduran mahogany body. Honduran mahogany is a protected species, so legally sourced stock is scarce, and many builders have moved to other mahoganies. It’s the same wood behind the late-’50s Les Pauls this design draws from. The body is finished in high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer and trimmed in non-grained ivoroid binding. It weighs 8.18 lb.
The Honduran mahogany set neck has a ’60s profile (.865" at the 1st fret, .967" at the 9th) under the same gloss nitro. The set-neck joint ties the neck and body together for strong sustain. The rosewood fretboard has mother-of-pearl dot inlays, a 12" radius, and 21 medium frets on a 24.875" scale. The bone nut is 1.730" wide. The headstock wears an ebony veneer with a mother-of-pearl Collings logo. A Kluson ABR-1 bridge with retaining wire and a Kluson stop tailpiece give it a vintage-correct setup. Nickel Gotoh tuners with Collings logos and ivoroid buttons keep it in tune.
A pair of Lollar Imperial humbuckers run through 2 volumes, 2 tones, and a 3-way selector. The Imperials are vintage-voiced, with clear highs and an open midrange that holds up under gain. That covers warm, round neck-pickup leads, rich middle-position cleans, and a biting bridge pickup for rhythm.
