This 2008 Collings I-35 Deluxe in Blonde (Serial #8363) is Collings’ take on the classic thinline semi-hollow, the format made famous by late-’50s Gibson ES-335s. A quilt maple top sits over a Honduran mahogany body. The Blonde finish lets the quilt figure show through in full. Honduran mahogany is a protected species, so legally sourced stock is scarce, and many builders have moved to other mahoganies. The body is finished in high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer and bound in grained ivoroid. At 6.72 lb., it’s light for a semi-hollow and easy to wear for a full set.
The Honduran mahogany neck has a medium-fat “C” carve (.820" at the 1st fret, .970" at the 12th) under the same gloss nitro. It joins the body with an extra-long mortise-and-tenon set-neck joint. The longer tenon puts more neck wood in contact with the body for added stability and sustain. The rosewood fretboard is bound in grained ivoroid, with mother-of-pearl dot inlays, a 12" radius, and 22 medium jumbo frets on a 24 7/8" scale. The bone nut is 1 11/16" wide. The headstock has a rosewood veneer, a mother-of-pearl Collings logo, and grained ivoroid binding to match the body and fretboard. A Kluson ABR-1 bridge and Kluson stop tailpiece anchor the strings. Gotoh tuners with Collings logos keep it in tune. All the hardware is gold, a sharp contrast against the Blonde top.
A pair of Lollar Imperial Low-Wind humbuckers run through 2 volumes, 2 tones, and a 3-way toggle. The low-wind version has lower output than a standard Imperial, so it has more headroom, clearer note separation, and an open, airy top end. It suits the semi-hollow body well. Expect warm, round jazz tones from the neck pickup, a hollow chime from the middle position, and a bridge pickup that cuts through without getting harsh when you push an amp. Whether you’re a jazz player, a blues guitarist, or a collector who wants a semi-hollow with Collings build quality, the I-35 Deluxe fits right in. It’s in excellent used condition, with some light scratches and swirling in the clearcoat. This one (Serial #8363) comes with its original hardshell case. Order today from Brian’s Guitars.
