The 1990 Gibson L-4CES in Tobacco Sunburst is a single-cutaway archtop from Gibson's long-running jazz line. The carved spruce top sits over a mahogany body, finished in gloss nitrocellulose lacquer with multi-ply cream binding and a multi-ply tortoise pickguard. Gold hardware throughout. It weighs 7.64 lbs. For a guitar that's 36 years old, wear is minimal — some light scratches and swirling in the clearcoat on the body, light checking on the fretboard binding and around the headstock inlays. It comes with its original Gibson USA hardshell case..
The mahogany neck is a C carve measuring .830" at the 1st fret and .935" at the 12th, set into the body for the sustain and warmth archtop players expect. The ebony fretboard has a 12" radius, cream binding, mother-of-pearl split parallelogram inlays, and 20 medium jumbo frets. Scale length is a short 24.5", with a 1 11/16" nylon nut, which keeps string tension relaxed and bends easy. The gloss black headstock carries mother-of-pearl "Gibson" and crown inlays. A Tune-O-Matic bridge, the L-4's distinctive "T" tailpiece, and Gibson Deluxe tuners round out the hardware.
Two Gibson USA humbuckers run through the traditional 2-volume, 2-tone, 3-way toggle layout, giving you independent control of each pickup and blend positions in the middle. The neck pickup on a spruce-topped hollowbody is the whole point here: thick, woody, and vocal, with the acoustic character of the carved top coming through underneath. Roll the tone back and you're in classic jazz box territory. The bridge pickup adds enough bite for blues and rockabilly work. Whether you're a jazz player looking for a real archtop, a gigging guitarist who wants something with air in it, or a collector of early-'90s Gibsons, this L-4CES is worth a look. This 1990 Gibson L-4CES (Serial #91450443) includes the original Gibson USA hardshell case.
