This 2023 Paul Reed Smith Private Stock Grainger 5-String Bass in Natural (Serial #0367369) was custom built for Gary Grainger, who co-designed the PRS Grainger bass with Paul Reed Smith, starting with the Private Stock model in 2003, and serves as the lead designer of PRS’s Private Stock basses. That work later grew into the Core Grainger 4 and Grainger 5, now played by bassists including Rhonda Smith, Eric Bass, and Kevin Walker. Grainger built his reputation long before that. The Baltimore native toured with Pockets as Earth, Wind & Fire’s opening act in the late ’70s, then became a busy East Coast session player. From 1986 to 1992 he held the bass chair in John Scofield’s band alongside drummer Dennis Chambers, recording Blue Matter, Loud Jazz, and Pick Hits Live. His credits also include George Duke, Nancy Wilson, Frank Gambale, and Acoustic Alchemy. This bass was built by the PRS Private Stock team for its namesake.
The back of the headstock is signed by Paul Reed Smith and hand-labeled “Custom Built for Gary Grainger.” The body pairs a carved figured maple top with a mahogany back, finished in high-gloss nitro. It weighs 10.2 lb. The bass is used and in very good condition. The top shows light swirling, a few light scratches, and a handful of tiny dings in the clearcoat. The back has more dings and some scratches. An aftermarket ebony finger rest is installed between the pickups.
The mahogany neck is a set-neck design, which helps sustain and gives the bass a solid, connected feel. It’s carved to PRS’s GG 5 profile (.795" at the 1st fret, .895" at the 12th) and finished in high-gloss nitro. The ebony fretboard carries mother-of-pearl bird inlays, a 12" radius, and 24 frets on a 34" scale. A 1.725" brass nut, PRS 5-string brass bass bridge, and PRS by Gotoh bass tuners make up the hardware, finished in brass and smoked black chrome. The ebony headstock veneer has the mother-of-pearl Private Stock eagle.
A pair of GG5 pickups at the neck and bridge feed two push/pull volume controls, a 3-knob EQ, and two mini toggles for voicing options. That gives you plenty of control over tone, from round, deep lows to tighter, more focused mids. It’s a fit for a working bassist who wants a Private Stock 5-string, a collector of PRS artist instruments, or a fan of Gary Grainger’s playing. This used 2023 PRS Private Stock Grainger 5-String Bass (Serial #0367369, custom built for Gary Grainger) comes with its original PRS Grainger hardshell case.
