This 2021 Paul Reed Smith Wood Library Custom 24-08 in Violet Blue Burst (Serial #0321552) comes from PRS’s Wood Library program, which builds core models with premium woods and appointments beyond the standard catalog spec. On this guitar, that starts with a one-piece quilted maple 10 Top. Most quilted tops are two bookmatched halves joined down the center, because a single board of quilted maple wide enough to cover a whole body is hard to come by. Finding one with 10 Top-grade figure is rarer still. Here the quilt runs edge to edge with no center seam, deep and three-dimensional under the Violet Blue Burst. The top sits on a mahogany back, finished in high-gloss nitro with a scraped natural edge in place of binding. At 7.7 lbs., it’s comfortable through a long set.
The set neck is roasted flame maple, shaped to PRS’s Pattern Thin carve (51/64" at the 1st fret, 57/64" at the 12th) with a satin nitro finish for fast, smooth movement. The fretboard is Brazilian rosewood, the standard fretboard choice on golden-era electrics like late-’50s Les Pauls, ES-335s, pre-CBS Fenders, and vintage Martin acoustics. Today it’s highly protected, so ethically sourced Brazilian rosewood is scarce, and few new guitars are built with it. Players prize it for its density and natural oils, which gives it a clear, articulate attack and rich overtones. It also has a look all its own: deep browns to reddish hues, dark streaks, and at times the striking “spiderweb” figure collectors look for. PRS matched it with a Brazilian rosewood headstock veneer and set mother of pearl bird inlays into the board. Specs include a 10" radius, 24 PRS frets, a 25" scale, and a 1 11/16" nut. The 24-08 setup is where this guitar gets its tonal range. Instead of the more modern 85/15s that ship as standard, this one is loaded with 58/15 LT humbuckers, the vintage-style pickups found on PRS’s McCarty models of the era, with a warmer, more open voice and plenty of clarity. They run through volume, tone, a 3-way blade, and two mini-toggles that tap each pickup independently. That gives you eight distinct sounds, from full, vintage-voiced humbucker tones to bright, articulate single-coil sounds.
