Walrus Audio Fable MKII Granular Soundscape Generator Black

The Walrus Audio Fable MKII Granular Soundscape Generator is a stereo ambient pedal that combines delay with granular processing. Granular processing breaks your signal into tiny samples, called grains, taken from a delay buffer. The Fable can play those grains at double or half speed, play them in reverse, or play them from several points at once. Each of its five modes runs two effects in series, with Feedback and Regen controlling each path separately. The signal then loops back through both effects before it reaches the output. That’s how the Fable goes from smooth ambient washes to strange, organic reverb to dense, glitchy swarms. It runs on Walrus Audio’s in-house MDSP platform and features artwork by Niall Grant.

Mode I sends a reverse delay into reverse granular, so the grains play backward and the feedback paths keep flipping them around. The X knob sets grain size. Lower settings give long, smooth reversed swells, and higher settings give stuttering reverse glitches. Mode II sends a forward delay into octave-up granular, where double-speed grains stack up in the feedback for bright, airy cascades. Mode III sends a warm analog-style delay into octave-down granular. The half-speed grains produce deep, heavy repeats and a thick, murky ambience. Mode IV is the Grain-Verb, with two multi-tap granular engines in series. Each one plays several samples from its buffer at once, building glitchy clouds and a reverb-like wash. In this mode, the Time knob time-stretches both engines and changes the length and tone of the effect. Mode V sends a forward delay into randomized pitch granular. Every grain gets a random speed (double, half, or normal) and a random direction, and X sets how fast the pitch changes.

A single Tweak knob covers five more settings. Press the Tweak button to choose one, then turn the knob to set it. Width controls how far the wet signal spreads across the stereo field, and running mono in to stereo out makes one guitar sound much bigger. Mod Rate sets the LFO from 0.1 Hz to 5 Hz, and Mod Shape selects sine, square, or random. Shift and Ramp set up Dive/Rise. Press and hold the tap tempo switch and the pedal’s clock rate bends down or up, staying there until you let go. Shift sets the destination from 0.5x to 2x. Ramp sets the travel time, from a 50 ms jump to a 5000 ms glide. In Mode IV, set Time and Shift to different values so Dive/Rise has room to work.

Store three presets on the pedal itself (red, green, and blue), or use the white live mode to play straight from the knobs. MIDI gives you 127 more preset slots, and each preset keeps its own expression assignments. With MIDI clock, delay time follows your tempo from 100 ms to 1000 ms in Modes I, II, III, and V, and it drives the sample rate stretch in Mode IV. Every knob, plus mode select, bypass, and tap, responds to MIDI CC. The expression jack can control any knob or work as an external tap. You get stereo 1/4" inputs and outputs, 1/8" TRS MIDI In and Thru (Type A), and a USB-C port for firmware updates. Bypass is buffered, and the pedal ships in Trails mode, so the feedback fades out on its own when you switch it off. Switch to No Trails for a clean cut. The enclosure is 4.70" x 3.93" x 2.30" including knobs. Power is 9V DC, center negative, 300mA minimum, from an isolated supply (sold separately). The Fable MKII is backed by Walrus Audio’s Limited Lifetime Warranty. Whether you’re an ambient guitarist, an experimental player who likes things glitchy, or a sound designer building textures for film and games, the Fable MKII has a lot to offer.
